The Orange Prize was established in 1996 to celebrate the very best fiction written in English, by women, throughout the world. The Prize promotes excellence, accessibility and originality and aims to introduce writers of quality to the widest possible audience.

Each year a shortlist of six novels is selected from well over a hundred entries. The prize of £30,000 and a limited edition bronze figurine known as the ‘Bessie’ are both anonymously endowed.

The Prize is sponsored by Orange, the UK’s most popular mobile phone service. It is central to the overall commitment Orange has to the arts, education and continuous learning.
